These two menus were issued on consecutive days for private dinners at Parkinson’s Saloons, which for decades catered to the finest culinary tastes in Philadelphia. Though in use for only one evening, the menus needed to meet the high standards of the establishment and the expectations of its clientele. At first, the two appear quite similar, but upon examination, we find that the type has been entirely re-set, and the flowers and leaves have been hand-colored. Furthermore, the paper has not been pre-ornamented with the gilt engraved border. That was added after the printing of the text. However, the wine list found on the inside of each menu has clearly been printed, in green, from the same setting of type, thus allowing for some economy in production.
