Theodore Metcalfe Company scrapbook. Boston, 1873-1891.
This scrapbook of the premier Boston pharmaceutical firm, established in 1837 by apothecary Theodore Metcalf, contains over 1,000 pieces of business ephemera accumulated over almost two decades. The proofs and samples of labels, circulars, envelopes, business cards, price lists, form letters, billheads, and wrapping paper, is a testament to the acumen of the company’s founder, active in the firm until his death in 1894. Often accompanied by penciled-in order details, as shown on this page, the scrapbook’s content serves as a commercial archive of a firm that took advantage of new printing and marketing techniques such as chromolithographed greeting and trade cards.
