These matchbooks were issued during World War II and given freely to members of the armed forces. The message is abundantly clear: “Don’t get burned … Use cover.” The matchbooks provided a way for men to carry the public health message with them and, perhaps, to be reminded of it when offering a light to one of the young ladies at their next port of call.
