As advertising developed and its impact grew during the 19th century, it was the popular, or patent, medicine trade that took the lead in its exploitation. These entrepreneurs were the first to test each new technology and tactic, and they were the ones to demonstrate, through their rapidly expanding and profitable trade, the value of commercial ephemera.
